Five guys in Syracuse, NY - December 26

Five guys was pretty good. The steak fries (natural cut) were a little soggy. I saw they weren't store bought; I saw people chopping them in the back. They had lots of skins; unfortunately I'm not a fan of skin fries. Overall I give them 3.5 or 4 out of 5.

Echo Tap

These fries were... OK. They were warm, but cold on the inside. I was very disappointed in their cooking. I am hoping for better stuff next time! There was no salt at all! :( Which I love! so I am hoping for much better fries!!!
They had skins on the ends, but that made them a little better! :)

Fries on the road

When you're eating on the road, it gives you a different feeling.  I was on an RV trip around the great lakes, and we got to eat out a lot.  It's different because you're not used to the places you go, and it feels different.  You have to get used to it, and be willing to try different things.  It's just french fries; even if they're different, it can be OK.  I recommend Culver's over McDonalds if you go fast food while on the road.

Heid's (Liverpool, NY)

My Dad and I went out to get a hot dog at Heid's one night (late) and we bought hot dogs and a large fry.  The fries were really, really good; they had lots of salt (which I like).  They were natural cut, with skins on the ends.  They were soooo delicious.  I didn't expect a little tin of fries to be a large fry.  If you like hot dogs and you like fries, definitely go to Heid's.

Captain Barker's (Superior, WI)

The food that I had at Captain Barker's I expected to be good; well, I was wrong.  My mom heard that it was the place to go, but she was wrong.  The fries - again - looked like they were baked.  I couldn't even bite into them they looked so bad.  I do not recommend this place.  They were batter dipped and store bought, and they weren't warm when we got them.  They only had a pinch of salt.  Try someplace else. 1/5.

Calumet, MI (Michigan House)

Michigan House (Calumet).  These fries weren't best in show either.  They kind of looked a little green when they arrived.  I asked myself, what are these?  They were natural cut, minimal seasoning (a little salt).  But when I bit into them, they tasted raw.  They may have been baked instead of fried like most fries.  I see no point in baking your fries.  Disappointing, especially when the chicken was pretty good.

Ikea (Mall of America) were OK.  They weren't my favorite or best in show.  They were natural cut, with skins. One thing I didn't like about them was that they were too soggy.  Who likes soggy french fries???  I don't.  I expected Ikea to have good food at cheap prices.  It turned out to be this:  they had no seasoning and no salt (kind of plain like their furniture). 2/5.

FRIES AT MEMORIAL UNION TERRACE

These fries were super-good.  They were double fried and batter dipped, with skins on the edge.  There's no other way to describe them but delicious.  They were crispy and hot, which made them even more tasty.  You can get them with dipping sauces, but I prefer none.  If it's a good fry, you don't need sauce.

Jac's on Monroe Street

The frites at Jac's were definitely interesting.  The fries are fresh cut--straight cut--and have skins on them.  They have the goodness of a french fry with the crispiness of a potato chip.  There was a lot of seasoning on them, but it was really good. They come with aioli for dipping.  I would put these in my top seven in Madison.

Blue Moon

The fries at Blue Moon are very, very good - the problem is they can be too crispy (you can't even taste the potato).  They are crinkle cut, and they come in large orders.  They come hot, which is a good thing.  They usually put a little to a medium amount of salt on them, which is also good.  I would rate these on my top 3 in Madison.  I would highly recommend going there and getting the fries (and other stuff).

Babe's Sports Bar

These were good fries, but the problem was they also tasted store bought (kind of like Rookies).  These were shoestring style and looked very good - but when you bit into them they weren't always cooked.  They were not salty at all; I had to add salt.  They also weren't as crispy as I like, especially for shoestring.  The portion size was large; they come in large baskets.  I couldn't finish them because they weren't quite done enough.

Rookies (in Black Earth)

The fries were good and crispy but they tasted store bought. They were steak fries, natural cut (skins on) but they didn't taste that way. Lots of salt (a good thing), but it was too much even for me. There was some pepper on them, too. The main dish came with few fries...so if you go, get a separate order. Honestly I would recommend going to rookies to look at sports decorations and play whiffleball.

Simm's Place Tavern (near Oscar Mayer/Kraft)

When I went to Simms Place it was different than I expected. The fries were amazing! I didn't expect them to be that good. They put exactly enough seasoning on the crinkle cut fries. A few seemed not quite done in the center but they were so good I wanted more (my mom wouldn't let me get more). It was a nice place, but well, it's a little small. For its size, they have amazing food.

Laurel Tavern

Today I went to the Laurel Tavern on Monroe St. I was so happy to go there because it's my favorite restaurant, but sadly, they used too much salt. I mean, the fries we're good, but they used a boatload of salt on the fries. It was a big disappointment, but I managed. The fries were crinkle-cut shoestring blend. Super thin fries with crinkle cut shape and lots of salt. Me and my peeps ordered 4 baskets of fries and gobbled 'em up in like 15 minutes. They were delish!

Culvers Butterburgers and Frozen Custard

Today I went to Culver's and what is different from regular bars is that 1)They put your fries in a little bag instead of giving you a basket, 2) It's FAST FOOD. I'm not kidding. Once you sit down, your  food is there.
The fries were fabulous. They were crinkle cut , crisp on the outside soft on the inside. Maybe you should go there sometime!

Red Robin

Red Robin was good, but sadly they changed the fries from last time. They used to put seasoning on the fries (only a little bit though) that gave them a lot of good taste. Now there isn't any seasoning at all on the fries soif you don't like seasoning you'd like Red Robin.

These are the french fries I had at Lucky's. Seasoned with salt and pepper and thin cut deliciousness!
The sign on Lucky's bar and grille across from Camp Randall Football Stadium in back of the building.

Lucky's bar and grille, my first stop

At around 8:00, I got home from Lucky's bar and grille. On a scale from 1 to 4, I'd give it a 3. The fries were good, but if you love seasoning, you'd love Lucky's. they have fun games and hilarious TV shows like Wipe out.  It was so much fun!. .

meet ME!!!!

Hi.  I'm Elizabeth.  This is my french fry blog for in and around Madison, WI.  My friend Julia's dad, Greg, suggested that I do this.  I love french fries.

I am going to go around Madison finding the best and worst french fries at all bars, pubs, grills and restaurants.
